Autoredacters, 2026

Cotton thread, plastic-coated wire, painted wood

When 2D facial images and texts are redacted, typically with dense black rectangles, is it for protection, privacy or erasure? Who wields the power to redact? Or to remain unknowable? In Autoredacters, collaborators were invited to draw an atypical redaction mark, a free-flowing squiggle, and choose a coloured thread. Their squiggles were then replicated as free motion embroidered shapes, each held together only through thousands of tiny stitches, and mounted as wearable headpieces. Each Autoredacter is unique and its original author anonymous. In a time of increasing digital surveillance and facial recognition, they playfully side with Glissant's 'right to opacity'.
